SM Caen took themselves off the bottom of the Ligue 1 table after demolishing Stade Rennais at the home of the Breton side.

The visitors got off to a superb early start when ex-Rennes favourite, Julien Feret, crossed in from a second ball after a corner to find Sloan Private who leaped above the rest to head down to goalkeeper, Benoit Costil's left post.

Rennes showed great character after going a goal down, Christian Bruls and Pedro Henrique linked up well, leaving the latter man unfortunate to shoot over the bar. Bruls had played a sly dink towards the Brazilian winger who took too much time before releasing the shot.

Rennes positive play played off when the unlikely source of Benjamin Andre levelled the game on fifteen minutes. Christian Bruls was the architect in the attack as he found space to cross from the byline- intended target Henrique evaded the ball and fell to the feet of Andre who sent the keeper the wrong way to side foot into the net.

Julien Feret tried to create a chance for his new side, but was restricted to a 25 yard delected volley which posed no threat to Costil. Soon after, Pedro Henrique was in the thick of it again when he aimed a ball at Ola Toivonen. Unfortunately, the great frame of Damien Da Silva stepped into the path of the Swede to clear.

Sanjin Prcic got more involved in the game as the first half went on- Fallou Diagne pinged a smart pass across the field to the Bosnian who was put under immediate pressure and kicked the ball out off play. Next Prcic became the creator as he crossed in for Ola Toivonen who made a move to the near side to head the ball off the side netting.

Caen wasted a freekick in a dangerous area, being the most they had threatened their opponents since the early stages. However, Rennes weren't posing a great deal of danger either, with Andre shooting from long range and Ola Toivonen heading the ball into Remy Vercoutre's arms. It was up to Sylvain Armand to grab the game by the neck as he charged forward from the defence executing two shots on goal. Before half time Julien Feret hit a lengthy volley over the bar.

Caen upped their game, changing into a higher gear in the second half, and Rennes definitely felt it. Feret played a teasing ball through to Privat which looked like being easily finished had Romain Danze not intercepted the pass in the nick of time. Sanjin Prcic would have thought he could have made more with his shot with the outside of the foot which didn't threaten.

Caen thought they should have been awarded a penalty after Mexer looked to foul Bengali-Fode Koita when he was about to release the trigger in the box. In the follow up Privat also failed to finish as Costil made himself big to block from close range. Replays showed the referee was right in the penalty decision as Koita appeared to kick the grass before going over.

Caen found themselves in the lead once again when Feret played through Lenny Nangis who rounded Costil to hit into an empty net from an acute angle. The twenty year old found great composure to finish. Rennes looked to draw level again by changing their attacking options when Habib Habibou replaced Ola Toivonen up front. Habibou was busy from the off when he cut inside from the right wing to shoot, but Vercoutre held.

Sanjin Prcic did little in the second half, but he almost became assister from a freekick from far out. The midfielder swung a low ball into the box which Armand headed into the air, but kept on rising. Rennes should have been in the lead as Danze was one on one with Vercoutre against the run of play. The Rennes captain showed why he doesn't have many goals as the follow up effort striked the legs of Vercoutre. The next best chance for Rennes was through Prcic who seen his half volley go by the post.

Sloan Private curled a ball into the path of Nicolas Suebe who glanced the ball by the goal, giving Rennes a major scare of Caen increasing their lead further. When Rennes hit the bar, they didn't know how important it could have been had they scored. Armand spun a pass over the top of the Caen defence which substitute, Philipp Hosiner, headed off the woodwork.

Rennes were made to pay when their former idol increased Caen's lead. Julien Feret drove forward, and ending with him in a face-off with Costil- the attacking midfielder faked a shot forcing Costil to move, meaning Feret could slot into the right corner of the net. Nangis tried to get his second of the match when he brushed off the challenges from the Rennes centre-backs; he took himsef too close to the byline; then choosing to cutback and pick out Privat with a cross; but Danze managed to head the ball away to safety.

Damien Da Silva pulled the rabbit out the hat as he made the match 1-4 in the 89th minute. Feret turned assister for the final time, clipping the ball to a forward thinking Da Silva who swung a strong right foot at the ball from the edge of the area which dipped to the opposite corner, leaving Costil with no chance of saving it. Amidst an onslaught of boos, Habibou showed zero conviction when he hit the final shot of the match which ended in Vercoutre's hands.

Next week the winners of the match host Saint-Etienne, whilst Rennes travel to the capital to play the champions in a place where they have had some surprising results.
